An Unusual Excitement on the Subject of Religion

There is an unusual excitement on the subject of religion in the United States today!!

The whole country seems affected by it, and a great online debate is creating no small stir and division amongst the faithful #Christians of different sects.

There is great zeal on display from the different influencers and preachers who are active on social media in getting up and promoting this extraordinary scene of religious feeling, in order to have everybody converted to Christ.

The different teachers and influencers pretend to be fine with Christians believing the tenants of whatever Christian sect they please; yet when people began to file off, some to one sect and some to another, it is discovered that the seemingly good feelings of both the influencers and the followers are more pretended than real; for a contest of confusion and bad feeling ensues — influencer contending against influencer, and follower against follower; so that all their good feelings one for another, if they ever had any, are entirely lost in a strife of words and a contest of opinions.

So great is the confusion and strife among the different denominations, that it is impossible for a sincere seeker unacquainted with the centuries of theological disputes to come to any certain conclusion who is right and who was wrong.

The online tumult is so great and incessant — The protestants so decided against the Catholics, and both using all the powers of both reason and sophistry to prove their errors, or, at least, to make people think they are in error. — On the other hand, the Calvinist-Protestant and the non-Calvinism Protestant in their turn are equally zealous in endeavoring to establish their own tenets and disprove all others.

In the midst of this war of words and tumult of opinions, many sincere believers are left to ask: What is to be done? Who of all these are right; or, are they all wrong together? If any one of them be right, which is it, and how shall I know it?

Well, perhaps here is an answer:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

This passage of scripture comes with great force into every feeling of my heart. If any person needs wisdom from God, I do: for how to believe I do not know, and unless I get more wisdom than I have, I will never know; for the preachers and the influencers of the different sects understand the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible.

I have come to the conclusion that I must either remain in confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of God.

I am determined to “ask of God,” for if it is true that God will give wisdom to them that lack wisdom, and will give liberally, and not upbraid, then I might find my way to the truth by an appeal to God.
