Thou Shalt Not Kill: When is Killing Justified?

Scripture teaches us that there are times when we are justified in taking up arms and even killing in the defense of our religion, our freedom, our way of life, our homes and families, and our nations. But even in these we must be very certain we make righteous judgements.

In the scriptures the Lord would lead his people in battle and direct them, even commanding them when to fight. In this we can learn that the Lord will lead a faithful people in making correct choices in their defense. It is our responsibility as a people to be in tune to God and ever vigilant in our righteous conduct.

Let’s explore some scriptures that reveal the Lord’s will as it pertains to the use of deadly force in defense or legal means.

In Defense of Family & Home:

“When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace.” — Luke 11:21

In Defense and Preservation of the Faith:

“Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images... I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come... Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.” — Exodus 23:24, 27, 32-33

“The Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief.” — 1 Nephi 4:13

The Book of Mormon provides some unique and incredibly clear teaching on the use of war and the justified killing in defense of faith, family, and country.

“The Lord has said that: Ye shall defend your families even unto bloodshed. Therefore for this cause [they] defend themselves, and their families, and their lands, their country, and their rights, and their religion.” — Alma 43:47, Book of Mormon

“They have taken up arms to defend themselves, and their wives, and children, and their lands.” — Alma 35:14, Book of Mormon

“They were taught to defend themselves against their enemies, even to the shedding of blood if it were necessary; yea, and they were also taught never to give an offense, yea, and never to raise the sword except it were against an enemy, except it were to preserve their lives.” — Alma 48:14, Book of Mormon

Self Defense is Justified:

“Ye have sought to murder us, and we have only sought to defend ourselves. But behold, if ye seek to destroy us more we will seek to destroy you.” — Alma 54:13, Book of Mormon

“We believe that men should appeal to the civil law for redress of all wrongs and grievances, where personal abuse is inflicted or the right of property or character infringed, where such laws exist as will protect the same; but we believe that all men are justified in defending themselves, their friends, and property, and the government, from the unlawful assaults and encroachments of all persons in times of exigency, where immediate appeal cannot be made to the laws, and relief afforded.” — Doctrine and Covenants 134:11

“I give unto you exceedingly great praise because of your firmness, and also the firmness of your people, in maintaining… your right and liberty; yea, ye do stand well… supported by the hand of God, in the defense of your liberty, and your property, and your country.” — 3 Nephi 3:2, Book of Mormon

“They did take up their swords in the defense of their freedom, that they might not come into bondage.” — Alma 62:5, Book of Mormon

“I do not fear your power nor your authority, but it is my God whom I fear; and it is according to his commandments that I do take my sword to defend the cause of my country, and it is because of your iniquity that we have suffered so much loss.” — Alma 60:28, Book of Mormon

“He was a man who was firm in the faith of Christ, and he had sworn with an oath to defend his people, his rights, and his country, and his religion, even to the loss of his blood.” — Alma 48:13, Book of Mormon

Punishment of the Wicked is Justified:

“It is joy to the just, to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.” — Proverbs 21:15

“The revenger of blood, kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood.” — Numbers 35:27

Legitimate law under God is Justified in executing punishment, even until death:

“And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.” — Ezra 7:26

“The law requireth the life of him who hath murdered.” — Alma 34:12, Book of Mormon

“If there was no law given—if a man murdered he should die—would he be afraid he would die if he should murder?” — Alma 42:13, Book of Mormon

For the Legal Punishment of Crime

Civil Law under God is Justified in executing punishment, even until death:

"If there was no law given—if a man murdered he should die—would he be afraid he would die if he should murder?" -- Alma 42, Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon Teaches Us to Defend our Faith, Family, and Country

The Book of Mormon provides some unique and incredibly clear teaching on the use of war and the justified killing in defense of faith, family, and country.

“The Lord has said that: Ye shall defend your families even unto bloodshed. Therefore for this cause [they] defend themselves, and their families, and their lands, their country, and their rights, and their religion.” — Alma 43:47, Book of Mormon

“He was a man who was firm in the faith of Christ, and he had sworn with an oath to defend his people, his rights, and his country, and his religion, even to the loss of his blood.” — Alma 48:13, Book of Mormon

“I do not fear your power nor your authority, but it is my God whom I fear; and it is according to his commandments that I do take my sword to defend the cause of my country, and it is because of your iniquity that we have suffered so much loss.” — Alma 60:28, Book of Mormon

And in the Restoration the Lord has given this direction:

“We believe that men should appeal to the civil law for redress of all wrongs and grievances, where personal abuse is inflicted or the right of property or character infringed, where such laws exist as will protect the same; but we believe that all men are justified in defending themselves, their friends, and property, and the government, from the unlawful assaults and encroachments of all persons in times of exigency, where immediate appeal cannot be made to the laws, and relief afforded.” — Doctrine and Covenants 134:11
